I got this for a Mother's Day gift a few years ago and it is looking great this year!

Hydrangea Stages

We had a very late freeze last spring (more like early summer) and at that time my Hydrangea was loaded with flower buds and new growth.. Well guess what happened.. Most froze overnight, even covered with a sheet and turned brown the next day.. Some a very small some survived and that is where my blue blooms come from.. The survivors of the freeze.. However the plant has buds and blooms in all sorts of stages, which provides a much longer blooming time for this plant, which for me is usually a one time show in June..

Lady In Red (Hydrangea macrophylla)

This lacecap variety of the hydrangea is an interesting plant.. I actually planted it last year for it's foliage.. The leavs turn reddish purple in the fall. The flat lacecaps are an added bonus. When it is spring and summer the veins in the leaves are red also.

It has grown like crazy this year.. I always use the 3 years rule before hydrangeas will be a solid reliable plant.. After one year it has been wonderful. It is more compact than a mophead. It also grows in US zones 6-9, so it won't grow where I grew up in Idaho.. Bummer!
